A novel approach for direct estimation of fresh groundwater discharge to an estuary

چکیده
[1] Coastal groundwater discharge is an important source of freshwater and nutrients to coastal and estuarine systems. Directly quantifying the spatially integrated discharge of fresh groundwater over a coastline is difficult due to spatial variability and limited observational methods. In this study, I applied a novel approach to estimate net freshwater discharge from a groundwater‐fed tidal creek over a spring‐neap cycle, with high temporal resolution. Acoustic velocity instruments measured tidal water fluxes while other sensors measured vertical and lateral salinity to estimate cross‐sectionally averaged salinity. These measurements were used in a time‐ dependent version of Knudsen’s salt balance calculation to estimate the fresh groundwater contribution to the tidal creek. The time‐series of fresh groundwater discharge shows the dependence of fresh groundwater discharge on tidal pumping, and the large difference between monthly mean discharge and instantaneous discharge over shorter timescales. The approach developed here can be implemented over timescales from days to years, in any size estuary with dominant groundwater inputs and well‐defined cross‐sections. The approach also directly links delivery of groundwater from the watershed with fluxes to the coastal environment. Citation: Ganju, N. K. A carbon isotope method to quantify groundwater discharge at the land-sea interface
We present a new method to characterize and quantify groundwater discharge to estuaries and the coastal ocean. Using data from the Pages Creek estuary in the Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina, we show that the concentration and carbon isotopic composition (D14C and d13C values) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) can provide a tracer of a single, well-defined component of the surf...
متن کاملDenitrification Capacity in a Subterranean Estuary below a Rhode Island Fringing Salt Marsh
Coastal waters are severely threatened by nitrogen (N) loading from direct groundwater discharge. The subterranean estuary, the mixing zone of fresh groundwater and sea water in a coastal aquifer, has a high potential to remove substantial N. A network of piezometers was used to characterize the denitrification capacity and groundwater flow paths in the subterranean estuary below a Rhode Island...

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient fluxes from un-sewered suburban landscapes pose a significant eutrophication risk to coastal waters. In unconsolidated coastal aquifers, nutrients recharged to groundwater undergo diffuse discharge to the coastline during SGD. Defining pathways of nutrient attenuation is required for land management professionals to take effective nutrient remediat...

Article history: Received 30 September 2007 Received in revised form 21 December 2007 Available online 8 March 2008 Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), from springs and diffuse seepage, has long been recognized as a source of chemical constituents to the coastal ocean. Because groundwater is two to four orders of magnitude enriched in radon compared to surface water, it has been used as both...

In this paper, we present an application of evolved neural networks using a real coded genetic algorithm for simulations of monthly groundwater levels in a coastal aquifer located in the Shabestar Plain, Iran. After initializing the model with groundwater elevations observed at a given time, the developed hybrid genetic algorithm-back propagation (GA-BP) should be able to reproduce groundwater ...
